Postgraduate Research

The Department of English, Theatre & Creative Writing offers committed, enthusiastic and dynamic research-based teaching, with a constantly evolving curriculum sensitive to developments in contemporary culture. The Birkbeck postgraduate community is one of the largest and most vibrant student bodies in the UK. PhD researchers work on a large number of topics across the fields of contemporary literature, audio and visual culture, science fiction studies, utopian philosophy, postcolonial literature and criticism, queer histories, avant-garde literary experimentation, digital humanities, and creative writing projects (including practice-based research).

The School of Arts supports applications for PhD funding from a variety of sources, including the AHRC-CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership, Birkbeck's own Diversity100 PhD Studentships, the Bloomsbury College PhD Studentship scheme, the Birkbeck International Studentship scheme, and Commonwealth Scholarship scheme. For more information on all of these sources of funding, see here: http://www.bbk.ac.uk/student-services/financial-support/phd-funding.
